A standoff, not a scar

The fragment cannot be welcomed anywhere the dark side is dense, so it pushes — and the displaced mass is packed into a shell around the void it has made, pressing inward from every side and never touching. Nothing has moved since the Hour and nothing will.

Which corrects something that used to be assumed. The seams are not damage. They are load. The colossal stress in that rock is not the leftover bruise of an ancient impact; it is the current reading, maintained right now, at every node, and it will still be maintained long after everyone alive is dead.

The halo

Every node is bound to the same scattered material, and that material is continuous across the world. This is the physical fact underneath time-standing: a city's phase offset from the dead city is not a convention or a tradition but a measurement of a real connection to a real corpse.

And it is why the shadow world is not merely poor. Off the halo there is nothing beneath the ground to listen to — not a weak signal, none.

The gate

The densest dead weight anywhere on the planet is the wall of the cavity, and the wall lies above the fragment. To reach a node you must first pass through the one place no flinch-bearer can remain.

So the Scales is not mining toward a mystery. It is mining toward a wall — and the likeliest truth is that the workings never arrive, because as the cut deepens the face becomes a place people cannot bear to be. Not forbidden. Just unstandable-in.

Fractal is the splash

The fragment shattered as it went in, spraying coupled material up through the crust — and that spray is what the Scales quarries.

Which means, without metaphor, that every master instrument on earth contains a piece of the dead city, and every horologist taking a reading is listening through the corpse.
