The Pulse The world has been ringing for three hundred years

One to two beats a second, felt in the bone and never heard — the only thing in this civilisation that is exactly the same for everyone.

Time is listened to, not kept

The horologists are not broadcasters. They are an order of listeners, with extraordinary ears and instruments of insane delicacy, and their entire authority rests on hearing the Pulse more accurately than anyone else can. The tick is the constitution, and the constitution is something you feel through your feet.

Which means the second is not arbitrary. The base unit of time in this world is one beat of the world, and every other measure is a subdivision or a multiple of it. A shot of coffee runs eleven beats. A distance is how many beats it takes to walk.

The only level thing

Silence is the great luxury here — the ambient world is loud, hot and smells of oil, so wealth is measured in quiet. But the Pulse is not in the air. You can build a hall so quiet you can hear your own blood, and you will still feel the world's beat through the floor.

The richest man alive lies in bed at night feeling precisely what a lamplighter's daughter feels. It is the only level thing in this civilisation, and people notice.

Music is played against it

The entire planet shares a tempo, and it sits squarely in the human musical range. So civic, guild and ceremonial music is played on the Pulse — and to play on it is to consent to it. Everything worth hearing is played against it.

Syncopation is not a technique in this world. It is a position. Jazz is an argument with the ground; rock is the attempt to drown it out; and a full room sets its glasses down on the beat without anyone deciding to, which is why the moment a band comes off it feels like the floor moving.

What it actually is — behind the curtain

Not known to a single person alive, and not knowable with any instrument this civilisation is permitted to build.

A mass suspended in a repulsive well cannot sit still. It bobs — and it is fed. Dark energy arrives along the loop and resupplies the node, so the Pulse does not merely fail to decay: it is driven, and it will go on being driven past the end of anything that matters.

The reservoir is finite. It is also so vast that in any human frame the word limit has no meaning — bounded the way the age of the universe is bounded, which is to say irrelevant to every life that will ever be lived beneath it.

Lucerna Perpetua was not a boast about the city's longevity. It was the specification of the machine: the everlasting lamp, the light that never goes out. And they achieved it. Not free power — this.

They built a perpetual machine. Its only output is the tick that measures how long they have been dead, and the entire surviving world sets its clocks by it.

Time-standing

Phase varies with position along the seams, so every city has a fixed offset from the dead city, measured in beats and physically verifiable by anyone with the instruments.

It cannot be argued with, inflated or falsified, and it is not a convention or a tradition. Every node is bound to the same continuous halo, which makes time-standing a measurement of a real connection to a real corpse.

Where you are from is a number, and the number is your distance from the dead.

Where there is none

Off the halo there is nothing to hear. Not a faint signal — none. Local clocks only, drifting a few seconds a year and compounding, until machine parts no longer interchange, contracts no longer align and signal towers cannot handshake.

Travellers who go off-grid report a nausea they cannot name and cannot sleep properly, and come back unable to explain what was wrong. The sickness has no name yet.

Proposed and unruled: that the body entrains too, so that a physician can tell roughly where a patient was born from their resting pulse alone.

Still unsettled

Its name. The Pulse is a working placeholder and has never been tested against alternatives — and under the naming taxonomy it needs both a mouth name and a plate form, unless it turns out to be one of the things that gets only one.

And the unit of time it defines is likewise unnamed, which means every duration in this world is currently being counted in a word we have not chosen.
