The Unrecorded What the archive cannot hold

A world that worships its archive has a short list of things it has never managed to write down — and they hold it up.

The CraftWorking names only. Spoken, never inscribed.
Dead weightA mouth name, and proposed: no plate at all
The keepersNo roll anywhere. Remembered only by those they trained.
The ColunaNever conferred a name. It wrote its own.
The true mapNot on paper, in any city
The sealHeld by the entries that do not exist

Why this is a category at all

In this world a name is not decoration. Seeing is knowing, the archive is power, and to name a thing is to index it — so the naming system and the political system are the same system.

Which makes a small, permanent set of exceptions extraordinary. Not secrets. Not suppressions. Things the record has simply never been able to contain.

What is on the list

The Craft, who have spoken working names and no inscribed ones — not from secrecy but as the literal condition of what they are. Dead weight, which the whole world stands on and no plate acknowledges. The keepers, because this world records machines rather than the people who tend them. And the Coluna, which no charter granted and no guild registered, and which acquired its name by erosion.

Everything attached to that machine belongs to the same category. It has no conferred name, its keepers have no record, and its second keeper has no name at all.

The one that matters

There is a chartered order whose function is to keep the seal on electricity — inscribed, named, funded, ceremonial. It does not have the knowledge. The Craft do.

The order that keeps the seal is theatre. The seal is held by the entries that do not exist, by people no charter compels and nobody thanks, because nobody knows.

The symmetry, if the rulings hold

The Craft: a spoken name, no plate. Dead weight, if the proposal stands: a spoken name, no plate, for the opposite reason.

And the event may yet end up with a plate name and no spoken name at all — the exact inverse, from the other end. Two exceptions to the taxonomy, arrived at from opposite directions.
