The Promise What was offered at Lucerna Perpetua, and what it cost
Power without fuel, without ash, without limit and without end — and the coupling worked in the same instant the city died.
Nobody says broken
The plate reads Promissum and people say the Promise, flatly, with nothing added. Nobody says broken, because everybody assumes it — and the bitterness lives entirely in the flatness.
It is also the only name anyone ever proposed that passes the light taboo, which is not a coincidence. Every other candidate reached for the moment, and reaching for the moment means reaching for a word nobody can say.
The period before it is the Before. The world dates by it: before, and since.
The reasoning was sound
Dark energy is a real reservoir and effectively bottomless. Dark matter is everywhere and does nothing. Turn the one into the other and you have power without fuel, ash, limit or end. Every civilisation that has existed has wanted this. That one worked out how to try.
Electricity was the handle — the only phenomenon they had that could take hold of something which participates in nothing. It was never the goal and never the crime in itself.
They were not fools and they did not fall for a scam. The world reveres and fears them, and it can only do that if the Lamp was right. They were. Being right is what killed them.
What came back was a refusal
Forced into contact, the two sides did not join, combine or transform. They shoved. The two halves of the universe are not indifferent to each other by accident — they are held apart, and that indifference is the only thing standing between everything and everything else.
It fired at the instant of coupling. The achievement and the catastrophe were one event, with no interval between them, which is why there is no careful version of the experiment: you cannot do it slowly, at small scale, behind blast walls, with a hand on the cut-off. The experiment is the explosion. That is why the prohibition is faith as well as law.
It was kept — behind the curtain
Known to nobody alive. Not to the horologists, not to the order that keeps the seal, not to the Craft.
They promised power without fuel, without ash, without limit and without end. Now look at what the cities have: dark energy arriving endlessly along the loop, feeding every node, powering time and progress, abundant, and bounded only in the sense that the age of the universe is bounded.
The Promise was kept. It simply was not kept to them. It cost a world, it arrived three centuries late and sideways and in a form nobody recognises as the answer to the question that was asked, and the people it was made to are dead under everybody's feet.
Which means every institution in this world is founded on mourning a success. The seal, the taboo on light-names, the day of silence, the whole moral architecture of there is no free lunch — all of it is a civilisation grieving something that worked.
Nobody living is in a position to notice, and nobody ever will be.
The great question, and why it stays unanswerable
Nobody has ever known whether free power lay on the other side, because nobody ever got far enough to look. The faith rests on a fact that cannot be recovered.
Some hold that the Lamp was a hair's breadth from paradise. Some hold that the universe simply refuses. There is no experiment that settles it and there never will be.
Behind the curtain, the joke is sharper than either camp suspects: the argument is about whether a thing succeeded, conducted entirely inside the thing that succeeded.
The record of the Before
There is an account of what the world was before the Promise, and it is inside Lucerna Perpetua — sealed, shelled, and upstream of everything.
Which lands on the wardens like a trapdoor. They keep people from going upstream; upstream is the ruin; the ruin holds the record. The order that does not know what it is for is keeping the world from recovering its own history.
Not the seal on electricity — the Craft already hold that. This one. And they would be appalled if anybody told them.
