The world in seven
start anywhereNo electricity
Not undiscovered — renounced. It was built once, and within an hour it took a city apart from the inside. It is now forbidden by law and by faith.
IIThe city that died
Lucerna Perpetua was scattered rather than burned. Every city alive today stands on a fragment of the corpse, and nobody may say its short name.
IIIThe world is still ringing
One to two beats a second, felt through the rock and never heard. Nobody transmits it, nobody can own it, and nothing will ever stop it.
IVNo two cities alike
The node gives you time; the land gives you power. A gravity city walks. An ice city condenses. A tidal city has two street maps a day.
VNothing is discarded
Maintenance is the true religion. Scaffolding is permanent architecture, patina is status, and names grow with every rebuild and never shorten.
VIThe Unseen
Everyone alive acquires a flinch at about six years old and nobody remembers learning it. A few children never do. Those are the ones who get taken.
VIILoudness is engineering
There is no amplifier, so to be loud you must build something. A full room sets its glasses down on the beat — and the whole point is to break it.
Ways in
routes, not menusFirst Light
What this world is, why it turned out this way, and what it feels like to stand in it.
6 stops — ends in a bar how it worksThe Physics
One law, applied four times. The Hour, dead weight, the nodes, and the tick that every clock in the world is set by.
8 stops — nothing supernatural walk into a roomOne Night in the Short
Down through the benches, in at the door, and all the way to the oldest machine in the city.
6 stops — mind the step the difficult oneThe Unseen
A reflex nobody can account for, the people it cannot get purchase on, and what it costs a household.
6 stops — the watching years how it talksThe Naming
A name here is the record. Two registers, one rule about growth, and the one word nobody in the world will say.
4 stops — ends in the archive's blind spot what it can drawThe Record
Four views of one city that have never been reconciled, a map of the shadows, and a section through a bar with eleven years left.
4 stops — mostly what is missingThe cities
a fixed number · no two alike
Seeds fell where they fell. The number of cities was set three centuries ago and cannot be added to — and what every one of them shares is a node, and therefore the beat. What none of them shares is how it makes its heat.
One is built. The rest are sketched: enough to know their physics and their shape, not yet enough to walk into. Start at the world.
the interactive descent is step four of the build
How this record is written
This is written from outside the world, not inside it. It documents what we know about the Clockwork World. It describes what the inhabitants know, believe, say and refuse to say — but it does not adopt their view, keep their silences, or write in their voice.
So this record says the Lamp where nobody in the world will. It states plainly that the Coluna has a second keeper, which no one in the Short has ever noticed. And where it knows something the whole world does not, it says so behind a curtain rather than pretending not to know.
The naming rule that follows from it: an entry is named for what it is, never for who holds it, made it or keeps it secret. A map of the Scales is a map of the Scales even if only the Craft carry one. Who holds a thing is a fact about the thing, and belongs in the entry — not in its name.
State of the record
built in pieces, on purposeThis is a working record rather than a finished one. Entries marked proposed are waiting on a ruling; entries marked open are questions the world has not answered yet. Names still missing include the event itself, the base unit of time, the shadow world, and the keeper who has stood at the Coluna for twenty-two years. Everything outstanding is gathered on the Workbench.
